@Katie: I've not tried coconut flour. Intuition tells me that it would throw a lot of things off because the consistency is so different. Maybe start with half coconut flour, half nut meal? I encourage you to experiment -- that's the whole point of these tiny little cakes. And let me know how it turns out! :)

Actually, as far as I know, the gender bias is only in the less civilized rural interior of China. One of communism's major tenets is gender equality, and in the cities where the government has a stronger presence, gender bias has been all but eradicated. The one-child policy has strengthened this. There's no more picking of favorites. Parents put everything they have behind their only child, girl or boy.

It's interesting ... I've heard a lot about the gender bias, but I've never seen it myself. For example, my father's sister, as the only girl, was the darling of his family.

No girl wants to be treated like a collection of cocktail party bragging rights." No kidding, but apparently there are guys in China who don't mind that, as long as they can find a wife.

Isn't the Chinese problem partly rooted in the shortage of women? Is there any chance that parents there will stop favoring boys?

I totally agree with you. The material girl words “I would rather cry in a BMW than smile on the back of my boyfriend’s bicycle.” appear almost everywhere in China. Even some people have already realized it not right to judge others or put their future happiness only on the so called 'material foundation', however, they still follow the whole society to define 'success' as having downtown big apartments, nice cars, high salaries and so on. I'm always joking maybe they are not marry a men/women, but an apartment. I don't know what to say to those men... Bad? Sad? ... As your words, you reap what you sow.

@Jennifer: I actually went cold turkey on dairy a month ago. It's been hard, but I'm already seeing marked health improvements, so it's been worth it!
